Black Fireplaces

You may recall that we're considering painting the bricks of our fireplace a darker color, like charcoal gray or black, as part of our family room makeover. Here's a current picture to give you an idea of what we're working with
I'll admit that I was a bit hesitant when Casey first suggested it, but she knows what she's doing, so I sought out a couple examples to see for myself.

The first was sent to me by the lovely Camille of the Vintique Object who's been thinking about doing the same with her fireplace.

Hmmm, I don't know about this one. Perhaps if it wasn't painted with high gloss paint I'd like it more.

I agree with Casey and think it will look good. It will certainly give our room the "Beacon Hill Brownstone Chic" vibe we're going for.

And if not, it is just paint, right?

Have you made any gutsy design decisions in your home recently?

I think it will look awesome! And you're right it's just paint, so one day you can change the color again. These are great inspiration images.

What a great idea! We have 7 fireplaces in our house and they are ALL white. It never occurred to me to paint them black! Love it!

You can see a few of our fireplaces in this post: http://sunla-designs.blogspot.com/2011/07/home-downstairs-before.html

Thanks for sharing,
Lisa!

I think it will look great! You could change out the hearth too if you wanted (put down marble or something to contrast?).

I think I saw that on one of the many design shows I watch on tv. haha

Can I just throw a spanner in the works and say that I really really like the white? But saying that, I know you guys are capable of making things look amazing so paint away! Can't wait to see how it all turns out!

I love the black idea...if the whole wall is already white, doesn't the fireplace deserve his own little color? (c: It's such a fantastic feature in a room and the inspiration pics have me, well, *inspired*! (c: I definitely don't envy you having to make that decision! Good Luck!

Your fireplace is gorgeous as is, but I'm sure it will look nice black as well. Love the pics.

Hi Carrie, I am new to your blog and really enjoying it. I recently painted our fireplace black but as it turns out it wasn't a great idea for us because of the overall design of built-ins around the brick. But I think with the style of your mantle black would great!
Here's a link to my failed project, it has a bunch more inspiration photos that you might be interested in. It's only paint - why not try it? :) I do love the look on other fireplaces!

I would have never thought of painting a fireplace black. I'm liking the inspiration photos though!! And like you said, it's only paint..and like 6 hours of your life...plus another 6 to paint over it. :P I think it will look great in your room!!

Hi Carrie. Thanks for the nice mention. Here's the thing: the brick is already painted anyway. It's not like you'd be painting over raw brick which you'd have a hard time getting back, like me. (Reason I'm stalling). You could always paint it white again.

Oh, one more thing. Since you are putting the TV above the firplace, painting it black will help the TV to sort of blend in. Can you tell which way I'm leaning?

I love all of the inspiration photos. It will be dramatic! Can't wait to see it.

At first black sounded scary - but after looking at the inspiration pics - wow! I say go for it.
