Family Room Project Kickoff

Lots of activity has started on our family room over the last few days. The most exciting by far was the early arrival of our new couch. About 6- 8 weeks early! If you recall, I ordered it at the end of July and was told there would be a 10-12 week wait. So we had to scramble a bit and find a place to put it while we work on the room. For now it is hanging out in another room in our house where it is getting acquainted with the new rug.
That's the fabric for the Salvation Army chair in the background
Then, between a girl's night out with my sister and sister-in-law to see The Help, a trip to Ikea, and another polo match, I somehow managed to find time to help Chris empty out the family room of all its furniture and lay down paper over the hardwoods over the weekend.
Chris removed the antiquated alarm/intercom/speaker (we really don't know what it was) and found some pretty old wallpaper underneath.
It made us wonder how the room may have been used and decorated way back when...
In any case, the stage has been set to begin stripping wallpaper. Fingers crossed that the walls underneath are in good shape.

Let the fun begin!!!

I'm so excited for you! And that's another thing I love about older homes - you never know what surprises you're going to unvail one day. We found a few different layers of wallpaper when we were stripping the walls and it was interesting to see the different schemes that the owners had chosen. Looking forward to the progress - and best of luck with the wallpaper stripping. Good music helps a lot!

I love that! We have little glimpses of some past wallpaper in our kitchen...it is still in the pantry and we decided not to take it out...a little piece from the past that is not in full view! Take care, Caroline

That's so exciting! Yay for getting the couch early! Good luck with the wall paper. Sometimes it comes right off, so maybe this is one of those times!

Your sofa is gorgeous!! Love it. I'm curious about the arms. One friend told me she likes the look of the english roll arm, but didn't like how the arms are too low to lean against if you want to lie on the sofa w/a pillow propped up on the arm. When we move, I'm seriously considering this type of sofa, but am curious to hear more thoughts about this.

I hope you find the walls in good shape when the paper comes down. It is fun to discover a bit of history in your home.

Love the sofa! The colour is perfect! I can't wait to see how the room turns out (or if you unearth anything interesting behind the wallpaper!)

We found a layer of ivory/red/blue striped wallpaper and then a layer of pink with gold dots peeking out from under some of our paint. SO true, it DOES make you wonder what the room once looked like! :)

(And how fun is it that your couch arrived early?!)

Good luck with the wallpaper - having stripped nearly every room in my house in the past 5 years, I do not envy you.

The couch is amazing!

What a fabulous surprise!!! That is totally the best to get something you are waiting for early (c: Getting it late is the *WORST*...I can't wait to see your room start coming together! And I love that you put in a little blurb about the old wallpaper...it's a fun little mystery about your house's previous lives (c;

Hi Fran,
Thanks for your comment. The low arm was a bit of a concern for me too, but we've been trying it out for the last couple of days and I've decided that I'm really happy with it. If I want something to lean against, a pillow does the trick. I've actually found that lying down is super comfortable, because the arm is low enough to rest my head on. this is going to be a great napping couch, I can just feel it!

I totally want to take nap on your couch. Does that weird you out? Because it should.

That wallpaper is pretty awesome. If only walls could talk. They should make that into a show...;)

The sofa is gorgeous! I live in a historic home too and there was the cutest nursery wallpaper we found in what is now our bathroom. So fun! We saved the scraps.

Your new couch is simply stunning, love those English arms. I love pulling apart old houses to see all the gorgeous things you find hidden. My Mum used to renovate a lot of old homes and I remember her finding newspapers under the carpets that were 100 years old.

My mom put flowered wallpaper in her bathroom like what you found back when I was in high school. Yup, "way back when." Sigh.

That doesn't happen often! I like the low arm and the style in general- where did you get it?
