For whatever reason a vision for side tables in my family room just wasn't coming to me as easily as everything else in the room has. I scoured magazines and blogs for something that might catch my eye as the perfect "I must have that in my family room" piece, but nothing seemed to fit the bill. Or if I did see something I loved, it was out of my budget. Isn't that always the case?
One night, Chris suggested that he just make them.
One night, Chris suggested that he just make them.
Custom made furniture...an interesting concept indeed.
But with his offer to make the side tables came a million questions:
How tall and wide should the tables be?
Round table top or square?
What kind of wood?
Should the legs be turned, rectangular, or square?
Should the tables on either side of the couch be an exact match?
Storage?
OMG.
After a LOT of indecision, I finally arrived on a design similar to this table. I like the simple lines and the shelves. Chris was able to find free online instructions that he can modify to my specifications.
It's a win win. I get exactly what I want and Chris is all pumped up fine tune his fine woodworking skilz. He bought himself a new saw and everything.

Love when the hubbys want to get involved and have ideas - score! And you've got a crafty/handy one. Looking forward to seeing it.
That's exciting! I can't wait to see the finished product. I'm sure it'll be AMAZING!
Lucky you to have a hubbie willing to take on such a project! Custom is always eye catching and not always affordable so nice to have the custom talent in house.

Do you know what I call a husband who gets excited about making his wife a piece of furniture? The sexiest man alive! Lucky girl.
Wow- those will be great, love the brass. They will be so special to you because they are custom and made by hubby!
Don't you like when those husbands are actually good for something other than producing stinky laundry?? These tables are cute...I mean Beacon Hill Brownstone Chic. ;)
Wow, you two are so talented! Can't wait to see it completed with its jazzy little brass feet!
I like it and how lucky are you to have this done all "in house!" Can't wait to see it...and those brass feet are a great touch! Take care, Caroline
Carrie, if my husband offered to make me a custom piece of furniture, I'd fall over dead! The more I think about it, the more I love the idea of having that extra pull-out surface. You can load up the top with pretties and then pull out the little surface (what IS that called?) for temporary drinks and snacks. Then clear off and stash back when you're done. And I LOVE that you thought to add the brass feet.

I can't wait to see how this turns out! I love the brass feet caps. We're thinking of making our own nightstands because like you we're having trouble finding anything we like that is affordable.
Oh this is going to be awesome. I love that he wants to make these!
I can't tell you how stoked I am for the little brass shoes. A LOT STOKED. That is totally cool that you have a hubby that wants to get in on the action and has the skills to back it up (c:
That is awesome. I love the shoes. You are a lucky girl. My guy could totally do this, but he would never agree to it.
I have to agree with all the other readers that you are lucky to have a handy man. My man is many things but handy is NOT one of them:) Can't wait for the tutorial on this and I adore the shoes.
Love that he has a new tool, because it's all about having the right tool for projects!
This will lead to so many new things!
Woah! Go, Chris!!! You guys are blowing my mind right now, can't wait for this:) Making your own furniture together...secret to a successful marriage;)
Looks like a great idea and the brass feet would be a nice touch. You are fortunate to have a good handyman who will work for free :)
You, my dear, hit the jackpot of all time with your hubby. I was so impressed that he was gung-ho about the reno, and now he's building furniture.
I like the table design. It has a little bit of a French-deco vibe.
Definitely do the pull-out tray.
And the brass shoes are an absolute must. I tell my clients they are "sabots", French for work shoe. And they are in a sense, working to protect the foot from over-zealous vacuuming and other dangers of mondern life! Besides, sabot sounds so much cooler than shoe, or boot.
Can't wait to see pics of the process and the finished piece.
What wood species are you thinking of using? It isn't a big piece, you could splurge on some bird's eye maple for the top, but I'm sure you have something fab in mind!
Your so lucky to have a talented husband to help you. Can not wait to see them when he is done.
Sure wish I had a "Chris"...lucky you! I agree...side tables...good ones..are hard to find. The perfect height, width, color, and I like a shelf below. Can't wait to see the finished product.
