Vanity Old and New

I received a lot of questions about our bathroom vanity and how we made it darker. I actually did it on a whim almost a year ago.  I had extra stain left over from another project and figured I had nothing to lose.

My thought process:
Myself: What if I hate it?
Myself: Then you can paint it white.
Myself: What if I don't like it white?
Myself: Then replace it.  Can't say you didn't try.

I'm so smart sometimes.

To refresh your memory, here it is in all its blond oak glory.
This is the product and color I used.
Not only is it a stain and polyurethane in one, but the directions say that you can apply it over existing stain. No sanding or stripping necessary. By my own admission, I'm really lazy when it comes to projects like these (much to my husband's chagrin), so naturally I was all over a product that did most of the the work for me.

After the first couple of brush strokes, I remember thinking, "Yikes! There's no turning back now!"
When I decided that I liked it enough to continue, I removed the hardware and the doors and stained those separately.
I ended up applying 3 coats to get the color I wanted.
Not too bad for the cost of a can of stain and a few hours of my time.

The after looks great! Three coats gave a perfect dark colour without being too dark.

Great job!

My brother is super close to buying a house...and I see a lot of this happening....unless I can talk him into the wonders of white paint.

Looks awesome! Great to know that you can apply that stuff over existing stain. I hate sanding or stripping.

Genius! I never would have thought stain-on-stain would work so well. What a great product.

Great stain job....I am usually tempted to paint wood, but here I think the darker stain was definitely the right choice!

Great color! It makes a world of difference - plus you can't beat how nice and sturdy an oak vanity is compared to some of the particle board junk I see at the big box stores!

This is too funny because my cabinets in my bathroom ARE that color and I want to lighten them! LOL! But my bathroom is very dark with just a little North window that lets little light in. Plus it's a very small bathroom with the cupboard being twice as big as yours so there is a preponderance of DARK. My fixtures are beige not white either. Your bathroom is full of light and I love what you did!
I would not have been able to leave the blonde oak alone either. It really looks great especially against your lighter than mine backdrop! LOL! You go girl! Oh! And thanks for the product update...I didn't even know that stuff existed! Anything that will save a few steps is a winner in my book.

I don't think I knew such a product existed. I will have to keep that in mind as I love anything that doesn't require sanding/priming. I bet you guys are hard at work in that guest bath!

I'm totally with you on having a product do all the work for you! It was like when I found about 'adhesion primer' - primer w/o having to sand! Loved it!

So much better now! I can't believe you can stain something like that without all those extra steps!

Thank you SO MUCH, Carrie! If I had to do my kitchen over again, I'd do this on the lower cabs instead. Just love the way it looks! And gosh, it seems like it couldn't be any easier. Pinning.

Could it really be so easy? No sanding=no heavy lifting=my kind of project. Great work.

I love it so much that I bought the stain last night and am giving it a try this weekend. I'll post pictures. I hope mine turns out just like yours.
