"If at First You Don't Succeed, Try, Try Again"

It has been a while since I've updated you on the progress of our guest bath. When we last left off, Chris and I had just finished spending lots of quality time together tiling the tub. With that behind us, it was finally time for Chris to start on all the millwork.
Sometimes it pays to try something a little different, and sometimes it doesn't. Such was the case with the molding installation. To make things a kind of fancy and elegant in there, we decided to incorporate chair rail and picture molding. The only catch was that there's a steep angle on one of the walls that made attaching the chair rail a challenge.

Chris found a way to get around it for the crown molding by building a soffit, and figured he'd do something similar for the chair rail.
Except it didn't look very good.
Hard to tell from this picture, but the piece of trim behind the chair rail is cut at the opposite angle of the wall to provide a straight edge for the chair rail to sit against.
I tried to like it, I really did! But the thick molding looked really out of scale for such a small room. Chris didn't like it much either, but he was willing to live with it if it meant that he didn't have to take it all down and start over...
But he did. Because he's awesome.

Here's the angled wall with a piece of trim behind it acting as a wedge.
 So much better, right?
Unfortunately, the redo set us back about a day. Small potatoes when you think about how long we plan to stay in this house (forever). As impatient as I am with our renovations,  I'm glad we didn't make any compromises in order to finish sooner.

Have you had any experiences like this? Or any where you decided to compromise?

It looks much better now, good decision! I hate those moments though because it's so difficult admitting the mistake and "wasting" a day to fix it, but it's always so much better in the end. Good job!

Much better... Chris is a good man! Yes, always lots of compromising with the significant other when it comes to renovations. Though I must say my hubby, while quite handy, does not possess the mad wood working skills that Chris has, so any compromising there is done with a professional!

I definitely think you made the right decision on this one. There are times that chunky molding is awesome, but it looks out of scale in really small spaces.

My hubby had to recut all of the crown molding the first time through because the angles weren't exactly right. I thought we could make it work but he was right and recutting them was the right choice.

being set back a day is nothing when you are going to live there for along time!!! totally worth it!

I know it was a waste of a day, but it does look so much better. This was not a case to compromise on. I'm excited to see more progress!

this looks 1000x better. We ran into this situation a lot with our first house, just wanting to be done with a project and not finishing through to make it perfect. We both were just having a conversation about how we vow not to do this with the new house!

Big high fives to Chris - does the man drink beer? He must drink beer. Tell him the next beer is on me. And I love the picture moulding idea. You guys work at a good pace.

Good call! I know how difficult it is to back track, especially when you have a long list of projects to complete. Glad it worked out - and I love the picture molding below!

I try to be patient, but sometimes I'm willing to compromise if if means getting done. Ryan doesn't have strong opinions about aesthetics, so it's usually me vs. him when I feel like we have to do things over. In the end, I usually call a re-do if it's something I'd really hate and compromise if it's something I'd probably never notice.

Glad you did it over. You'd never be happy with it and would kick yourself forever for not changing it when you had the chance!

It looks so much better! Lucky you that your husband re-did it! I'm not sure mine would have done that!

Looks sooo much better! All good things come to those who wait. You did the right thing. I believe in quality over quantity. A wasted day will soon be forgotten but the new and improved molding will always be loved and remembered!

It's never fun to have to redo something, but like you said, you're going to be enjoying the house for years and years.

I know how tough it is to backtrack when all you want to do is get the chop saw out of your living room, but it looks so much better. Kudos to both the decision, and the husband who redid it all! Looking forward to see the bathroom finished.

So much better to get it right! Just found your blog and so happy that I did. We just purchased a home built in 1900 and am anxious to look through all your before and after posts. Our home is in CT and it's our first old home. Lots of experience with remodeling older homes, but not this old.

I wonder if our husbands are ever going to start blogs where they post about all of the crap their wives make them fix...especially when the idea wasn't theirs to start with. :P

The bathroom is looking pretty...

I am dealing with the installation of some window treatments as we speak for a client. It's a pair of corner windows and one is more set back than the other. It has been making me crazy. Also, I have already had the panels made so I have to figure this out!! Do you and Chris need a vacay to Birmingham?! M.

Hey Carrie! I hope you don't mind but I tagged you in a little question and answer game. Please don't feel like you have to do it, but I thought it was kinda fun. :-)

I'm lovin' it! We've had to redo things a million times too, but it's always worth getting it right!

You have a good eye Carrie and Chris is a good man to trust it! It's really looking great. I have some tile grout that needs cleaning and will def try the method that you used.

It looks great! It's always frustrating to have to undo hard work, but it ends up being worth it to get what you really want!
