Beds in Front of Windows

I used to think that positioning a bed in front of a window was a big decorating no-no, until I saw these images.

In thinking about redecorating our master bedroom, I'd like to change the layout of the furniture.  Right now the headboard is against the largest windowless wall in the room, but this bothers me because you can't see it from the entrance. I like when you walk into a bedroom and BAM! the bed (along with the nightstands, bedding, etc) is the focal point.

The challenge in our bedroom is was that the "best" wall for making the bed a focal point has a window smack dab in the center of it. Doesn't seem to be an issue anymore.

What is still an issue is that the "best" wall is also sloped, which presents a window treatment challenge that I'm going to have to find a way to work around.

Look at me. I'm breaking rules left and right.
What are your thoughts on positioning a bed in front of windows?

I say it doesn't hurt to try it out. If you don't like it you can change it back.

You crazy rule breaker, you! I agree about the BAM factor when you walk into the room and see a voluptuous bed beckoning you into it! (Can you tell I love my bed and sleep?) Go for it....you can always move it again.

The ceiling in my daughter's bedroom is angled like the first image (just not that sharp an angle.) I like the way the bed looks with the window treatment behind it, it acts almost like a frame.

In the warm weather it's probably nice to sleep in front of an open window too!

I think it can look great, but I have so few windows I hate to sacrifice any natural light.

I've done it myself because I had no other place to put the bed. It was right in front of a bank of bay windows in a historic house I owned 2 houses ago. It worked great and each morning we were awakened to the morning light - which can be really good or really bad!

I like it when it'd done like the images you chose. I don't like it when people do it half hazard and there isn't any symmetry - I think it only works with symmetry. But hey, that could be another rule to break?!

I agree that's it's not a choice location, but sometimes it has to be done! We have windows or doors on every wall in our master, so I had no choice. Below is a link to our redo or that room--the finished pic is at the bottom. (P.S. I'm kind-of over the red--thinking of repainting in there.)

our bed in our last house was centered in front of a window, and it is in this house, too. and when we looked at both houses, they had the bed positioned elsewhere, probably thinking it was a no-no, too but instead they had the bed smooshed up against a wall... that bugs me much more! :) i think it is fine in front of a window and it's nice when you can ipen it and get a nice breeze while you sleep, too.

I've thought about it for our room but there are challenges (mainly size and cable options) that don't allow this to work for us. But I love the look of it - also seems to achieve a brighter space too.

Well... I'd always thought it made for an awkward layout. But clearly, I was wrong. I say try it! And then share it with the rest of us sissies!

I do not like decorating rules so personally I tend not to abide by them - whatever works for one and makes one happy! I do not have a problem with a bed by the window as long as there is another source of natural light or the window is not entirely blocked. These pictures prove that it can look amazing. I am sure you will do what works best for you and it will look fabulous.

Apparently I'm out of the loop because I didn't realize that was a no-no. I think the beds in your pictures look amazing in front of the window. Go for it!

Sometimes there's just no choice. One of the things that stand out in my mind from design school is a prof saying that in a bedroom there is ALWAYS one right way and many wrong ways. I've put our bed under the window before because it was the right place for the bed:)

What a rebel you are. Mixing it up! We have our bed against the only window in our room and I actually like it. I hope you take pics even if you decide to change it.

I always thought it was against the "rules" to - but I've seen it work brilliantly too many times - so I think it is time to throw away the rule book.

Ashley@AttemptsAtDomestication said...

I think you can create your own rules and it'll look great! We put our large desk in front of the window in our office (it was honestly the ONLY place) and after we fix it up a bit I know it will look great!

I was with you on the original no-no thought, but seeing those pictures has converted me! I always felt it was just awkward to block the window, but it seems worth it.

I say go for it!

Rules were meant to be broken, especially if this arrangement works best for your space. Go for it!

I like to walk into a room and face the bed too. It just feels more normal, doesn't it? I say give it a try. You'll never know until you do (just like my painted cabinet situation).

Erin @ His and Hers said...

Yup, you can always move it back if you don't like it! I could never figure out how the headboard would look cutting off a window. Always seemed like it would look weird. But those inspiration pics prove that it definitely doesn't have to look weird!

threeacres said...

I say try it out! I would center the bed under the window the best I could and use curtains to fix any symmetry issues if need be (looks like one or two of your inspiration pictures are doing just that). If the wall is short there don't be afraid to pull the bed away from the wall so you don't hit your head getting in and out of bed. That leaves you with some room to hang and adjust some curtains too.

I designed our new master bedroom to have the bed along the exterior wall as well but since we had to move windows anyway I went with two skinny windows over the nightstands. I love the idea of having the bed be the first thing you see in the room but I'm going to have to find some big art to balance out the room since all of the focal points (bed and windows) are on one wall.

Whose rules? It's your house you do what you want! Unless you're trying to sell it like me....then you buckle under! LOL! But just wait until I get my next and last house! NO RULES....I will go nuts with decorating frenzy!

I think it all depends on the space. I would try it and see how it works for you. Go ahead and break those rules! By the way, that first image is spectacular!

I broke in it my daughter's room. Sometimes window placement is just bad and you have to ignore it for the best layout for the space. As for the sloped wall, you could think about a canopy like treatment or even draperies along the entire wall (where it's flat) to give you a chic look. M.

I'm sure you'll make it work, and beautifully so! Let us know what you come up with for the window treatment.

Sally@DivineDistractions said...

I'm doing it in my guest room makeover. I think it's all about the window treatments. They have to be a great backdrop to the bed...making the whole better than the parts, if that makes sense. I'm taking the drapes out past the headboard a bit so that the bed will not look skimpy. It's all about proportion, so with that in mind, let's do it! Can't wait to see how it turns out (for both of us!)

Love how this can actually create a beautiful focal point in a room! Gorgeous photos!

I used to think it was a no no too but I rearranged our master with the bed in front of the windows and love it. The drapes behind it make a huge impact and read like a big dramatic headboard! So much for rules eh?!

Oh I am so psyched you are doing this! Breaking the rules--I am a fan. Excited to see the new space!

Deanna @ TheChangingHouse said...

My bedroom was designed to have the bed on a wall without a window (we painted this wall an accent colour to highlight the bed). But as the months passed by, we realized how awkward it was in the room and that the best layout was under a window. Yup. We did it. Our headboard only covers the window sill, not the actual window, so it's okay. I like it!

Lyndsay @ that 70s house said...

try it! i figure if you aren't blocking the window/light completely, why not? i love the visual impact of the bed facing the door too...so inviting!

There is a "rule" of feng shui that says you should be facing the doorway as you sit/lay in bed. I don't actually follow feng shui - but I DO like facing the door when I am in bed. These pictures you found certainly support the idea of the bed in front of the window! Good luck!
I'm a new follower. Follow back?

I agree with the bam thing. I don't want to look around the room to find the bed. We have the same issue and I've been dying to move the bed to window. (Got to DIY a headboard first.)

Do it!!
