While making breakfast yesterday morning, Chris and I made the observation that the birds outside were being especially noisy. As if they were in the same room as us.
Hmmmm. We went outside and soon discovered that some birds had made their home in our kitchen exhaust fan. That can't be good. Birds are cute and all, but they also carry mites and other unsavory crawly things. Plus the thought of having bird poop that close to where we prepare our food was really unappealing.
See that chain? We used to be able to open and close the vent from the kitchen. The chain broke not long after we moved in, so now it is stuck in the open position...making it the ideal spot for a bird to build a nest.
Luckily we didn't have to go to extreme measures to get rid of our unwanted house guests. Chris and I must have been loud enough in the kitchen to spook them away. By mid morning the chirping noises had ceased. I can't even see the nest anymore. It is almost like they packed up their belongings and took everything with them to a new home.
Now we all have peace and quiet.

No, you definitely don't want birds nesting there...but that picture is so cute!
That is so funny! We had birds nesting in our gutters, under the gutter guard! We used to hear them in the mornings running back and forth under the guard and then you'd see them fly off the end.
Hahah, oh little birdies. At least they moved on on their own and you weren't forced to evict them!
I'm always amazed at how what they'll use for nesting space. We have a broken light fixture outside that's turned sideways and they made a nest in it! Hope you can stop by soon and give your opinion!

Awww...I know, I always think they are cute...if they are in *someone else's* vent! ha! Good thing they had the good sense to move along on their own (c:
you would have thought they would be bothered when you turn on your exhaust fan! although maybe they liked the warm breeze? glad they are gone though!!
Our birds have been very noisy as well - so noisy that Sheila has been waking up extra early (woo hoo). I love birds and all things mother nature but sometimes they just need to pipe it down :) Glad you were able to get rid of your house guests quietly.
I guess they hear you talking about them. Too funny!
Leave to cute birds to nest anywhere.
Love the pic of the lil birdy :)
I get that issue all the time. What i do is replace them.
They are so adorable! But you are right, if they are nesting near where you prepare your food, it can be alarming. Have a wonderful day, Kellie xx
Did Chris reminisce back 20 years to the day he rescued his Mom (MIL)and removed what we thought was a darling bird nest complete with birdies, from the porch light. Using a tennis racket to keep the Mother bird from attacking him, he disengaged their little home and moved it to the backyard. The mites creeping into the kitchen were freaking out the (MIL). He's a pro!
I love when birds make nests in our yard but it almost always is in a spot that I can't have them! One of mine tried to make a nest in a hanging planter of ferns, but how am I supposed to water the fern with baby birds in it? Drown the birds or kill the fern. So I had to evict them before the babies made their appearance.
Bird nests are way cute, except if they are anywhere near a kitchen! Glad these lil guys took a quick hint and moved on!
Waking up to birds humming outside my window is music to my ears. Anyway, when we discovered that some sparrows were starting to nest on the roof of our garage, we took it upon ourselves to build a sort of bird house near our garden where they can relocate. I hope you can get that vent fixed soon, in order to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
