Grass and Stone
Unearthing the patio stones from our side yard last weekend has sparked our interest in using them to lay a very rustic patio.
I've always loved the look of pavers with grass or ground cover growing between them.
My favorite thing about patios like these is that they look like they've been there forever. They look carefree and relaxed...exactly the way I want to feel when I'm outside enjoying it.

I also like that they all look different because of the different shapes and sizes of the pavers - none of them looked forced at all. Have a great weekend Carrie - the forecast looks amazing! I'm off to a flea market tomorrow w/ my Mom so I'm hoping it's good.
This is going to look great! I love the moss growing up between them.
I love the look too! We have trouble in Iowa with pavers. (We've had them at our previous house. Nate's parents have them. My parents had them.) We have hard freezes and thaws so the pavers end up looking gross...and dangerous. Sad. I'll live vicariously through your patio.
Have always really liked this look, wondered about how much maintenance is involved though. Good luck and cannot wait to see!
I like this look. Do you think that was the original intent but then they relaxed a little too much and let it overgrow?
Love the look...we have pavers in a section of our yard with grass growing between. They are easy to maintain - just mow over or use edger to cut grass lower. Looking forward to seeing them in your yard!

We tried something similar a couple of years ago with found pavers but eventually the ground reclaimed them so we had to dig them up again and give up on our idea. It's still something I love seeing though and hope to one day have in one of our homes.
I love the look as well but we're finding it hard to implement. We created a big flagstone path two years ago and a matching flagstone fill in area between our driveway and a rock wall. For the path I've been trying to get moss to grow between the stones and for the fill in area we just used polymeric sand. The area with the polymeric sand has a tampered gravel base and the path has soil we carefully kept undisturbed to limit shifting and settling. The polymeric sand area looks great and never needs any maintenance. The moss I've been transplanting and watering for two years and it looked good at first but soon the weeds took over and they are nearly impossible to dig out between the stones. I even planted lots of creeping ground covers like Irish moss and thyme but the weeds still win. We don't plan to ever do any hardscaping with ground cover between the stones/pavers again!

Growing moss or a low ground-cover between stone pieces is such a great look.

OH.MY.GOSH girl I just pried loose bluestone pavers from one of my gardens and reused them to make a path this week, and holy hard work!!! Great upper body workout!!! Can't wait to see your patio come together. I'm in love with your backyard already!
