Decision Time

Our big project this summer is to get the house roofed and painted. When I last discussed our roofing situation, I was debating an asphalt product that looked like scalloped slate.

Chris read that blog post and immediately nixed the idea. He said he had "his heart set on using synthetic slate". Fair enough.
With that decision made we're really excited to get started, but there's a bit of a chicken and the egg situation going on. Before we can paint, we need to have the new roof put on. Before we can choose a roof color, we need to have an idea of what we want the new house color to be.
So I've practically covered my entire house in different house paint colors. We're still working on that decision, but confident that we're in the ballpark. Close enough to base our roofing color decision on anyway.
The sample board our roofer brought over was pretty useless in determining the color selections.
I don't think it was intended to select a color from, but rather to show how realistic synthetic slate looks, so Chris called EcoStar and they promptly sent us a Majestic Slate roofing tile fan deck.

We want it to look like slate and we want it to be dark. But not too dark...I don't want it to look like black rubber. Midnight Gray is the perfect choice.
Now we just need to make a quick call to our roofer with our decision and ask him to order the materials. Jeeze, let's get this project started already!

It is going to look great when it's done. Why does the planning stage take so long?

I'm excited for the roof, but even more excited to see what color you paint the house. Are you thinking the same color as the house you liked in your neighborhood? That would look amazing.

I had my doubts about this, but I must say that they look incredibly realistic!

I could imagine that they wouldn't have to be cleaned as often as real slate either?

We just went through this! The best thing my hubby & I did was drive around and look at how people painted their house . It sounds weird but I really didn't realize the different ways to do it, house, trim, fascia boars, gutters, etc..when we got home I took a picture of our house and then used Sherwin Williams color visualizer to "paint" our house...also, I wanted a somewhat dark roof but our roofer swayed us because it would make our house hotter on the upper floor. I can't tell you how happy I am with the way everything turned out, I'm glad we took our time...it's such a huge investment you really can't make any mistakes!!

Yay! That's exciting. I love when the husbands nix ideas like that. Mine does it all the time. I'll come home and he'll say "i didn't like that idea in the post today."

This is going to look great!

Wow, I can't believe how real the synthetic slate looks. I have always loved slate on the roof. I can't wait to see how the synthetic looks. Your house is totally going to be transformed after the new roof and exterior paint color.

Yeah, it is difficult to choose paint colors, especially if you're re-painting your entire house. Glad to know that you and Chris have reached a decision now. The slates look great, by the way. And they're going to look so much better once they're on the roof. Good luck with your project!

I don't think I've ever even considered options for roofing...but dang! That faux slate looks pretty rockin'! And speaking of rockin'...I absolutely adore yours for your front porch...totally awesome!

Yay for Midnight Gray!!! And Chris sticking to his guns!! Is the synthetic slate alot more money than the asphalt stuff? Ooh, I'm pretty excited about the new house colors! Can you give us a hint which ones you think you are going with?

This is exciting and I'm with Sarah - what colors on the siding do you think you're favoring?

I know you won't go wrong with whatever color you choose especially when you brighten up the trim. That cream will make a huge difference! Bummer that you will soon loose the haunted house vibe. ;)

Exterior decisions are stressful because they are so much harder to change. Can't wait to see how it turns out!

It’s good that you took your time on deciding what you really want for your house, Carrie. Slowly but surely :) Synthetic slates are durable enough to have ultraviolet inhibitors. These inhibitors mitigate the wear and tear damage from the sun. It also has a high fire-resistance which would prevent the fire to spread. Good luck on what paint color to choose for your roof!
